From NEET in Notts to a World Leaders scholarship, this is Esther's IAF journey...

When I first joined the team programme, I was hoping to step outside my comfort zone, learn new skills, and be involved in something that made a difference. Looking back, IAF gave me so much more than that. It became a place where I built confidence, formed lasting friendships, and grew both personally and professionally.

I had the opportunity to get involved in a variety of projects that challenged me and helped me grow. One of the highlights was participating in a community project alongside other team members where we helped renovate a local community allotment and planting area. I built a pond to promote local biodiversity, a bug house and a birdhouse, painted sheds and fences, and worked with community members to plan, gather materials, and bring the project to life. Through this, I gained valuable hands-on experience in environmental conservation and sustainable building practices. The team supported me in so many ways throughout my journey. They helped me secure a work placement which later led to me volunteering at an elderly care home. I completed a work placement at an elderly care home where I provided companionship to residents, supported care home staff, and helped organise activities and games that encouraged residents to stay mentally and socially active. This really strengthened my communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while teaching me how to adapt to new challenges and work with people from different backgrounds.

Whenever I needed guidance or support, the IAF team were always there to help. They also played a significant role in helping me get into college and had a positive impact on both my personal and academic growth. Since graduating from the team, I've continued to build on everything I learned by pursuing my studies at college and working towards my career goals. I also worked with a mentor to secure a part-time job where I've learned to balance work and academic life effectively while continuing to develop new skills and gain valuable experience. The confidence, work ethic, and positive mindset I developed during my time with the team have continued to guide me through every new challenge. I am now looking at my next steps and have applied for the President’s Scholarship for World Leaders Award in Canada.

I am truly grateful for IAF's encouragement, support, and belief in me. I'll always be grateful for the experiences, friendships, and life lessons I gained.  To anyone thinking about joining the Team programme, I would say go for it. Make the most of every opportunity, step outside your comfort zone, and don't be afraid to try new things. IAF will support you every step of the way, and you'll gain valuable skills, unforgettable memories, and friendships that will stay with you long after the programme ends.
