Mastering the STAR Method for interviews & applications
The STAR method is a tool you can use to answer certain interview or application form question clearly and effectively. It helps you structure answers to questions like “Tell me about a time when…” by breaking your story into four clear parts:
1/ Situation
Briefly describe the context of your example.
Include who, what, when, and where.
Keep this part short using 1–2 sentences.
Example: “At my last job, we were preparing for a seasonal product launch and our team fell behind schedule.”
2/ Task
Explain the goal or challenge you needed to address.
Clarify what your role was.
Example: “As the project coordinator, it was my job to organise tasks and get the team back on track.”
3/ Action
Describe the specific steps you took.
Focus on your actions, not the team’s actions.
Use action verbs and be detailed.
Example: “I reviewed our workflow and reassigned tasks based on my team's strengths. After this I set up daily check-ins as we moved closer to the deadline"
4/ Results
Share the outcome and impact.
Use numbers when possible.
Mention what you learned or how it strengthened your skills.
Example: “As a result, we launched on time, beat our sales target by 15% and I really appreciated the opportunity to show my leadership skills."
